Rain or Shine: Why Visiting Costa Rica in September and October Is Still Worth It in the Rainy Season

We hear this question a lot: Is it worth visiting Costa Rica in September or October during the rainy season? Will we be rained out, or is there more to it?

Visiting Costa Rica in the Rainy Season

The truth is, October is the rainiest month on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, so you’ll definitely encounter rain. However, it’s not constant downpours all day. Most days start with sunny, clear mornings before the clouds roll in by the afternoon, leading to showers or thunderstorms later in the day or evening. With Costa Rica’s diverse microclimates, the weather can change quickly—one minute it's stormy, the next, it’s sunny again. It could rain overnight, but you might wake up to blue skies.

The key to enjoying this time of year is being flexible and planning around the weather.

Here are a few tips:

- Always schedule tours or outdoor activities for the morning, as this is typically the driest time of day.

- If you’re driving, go for a 4x4 vehicle since some roads can get tricky after heavy rain.

- Avoid long road trips at night or booking late activities like sunset cruises since many operators pause these in October anyway.

- Expect some rain, but don’t be surprised if there’s still plenty of sunshine too!

While the rain may sound like a challenge, it’s actually a beautiful time to visit. Just make sure you pack a good rain jacket and take those weather apps with a grain of salt—they often predict rain all day, but Costa Rica’s weather is anything but predictable!
