Living the Pure Life: Embracing Costa Rica's Pura Vida Philosophy

Costa Rica is a country known for its stunning natural beauty, friendly people, and laid-back lifestyle. And one phrase that encapsulates all these aspects of Costa Rican culture is "pura vida." This term, which literally means "pure life," is more than just a saying or a catchphrase. It's a way of life that the people of Costa Rica embrace and embody in everything they do.

Pura vida has become a ubiquitous part of Costa Rican culture. It's a phrase that you'll hear everywhere you go in the country, from the bustling streets of San Jose to the beaches of Manuel Antonio. And it's not just a greeting or a goodbye; it's a way of expressing a deep appreciation for the simple things in life. Kyle and I fell in love with the country and agreed with the commonly used phrase during our first visit together. Pura Vida means "Pure Life"

So, what exactly does pura vida mean? At its core, it's a philosophy that values happiness, contentment, and gratitude. It's about living in the moment and finding joy in the small things, whether it's a beautiful sunset, a delicious meal, or spending time with loved ones. Pura vida is also about treating others with kindness and respect, and embracing a sense of community and togetherness. Even the Titi monkeys use the phrase in their high-pitched screams!

Hot Tip: Pura Vida is pronounced POO-rah VEE-dah if you speak English. It sounds more like POO-dah VEE-dah when you hear it from anyone that speaks Spanish.

If you're planning a trip to Costa Rica and specifically to The Villa Mariana, you'll undoubtedly encounter the phrase pura vida from our staff. And while it may take some time to fully understand its meaning and significance, embracing this way of life can help you appreciate all that this beautiful country has to offer. So, whether you're sipping a cup of coffee at a local cafe, hiking through the rainforest, or simply relaxing at The Villa Mariana, remember to embrace the spirit of pura vida and enjoy every moment to the fullest.
